In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in history and geography. They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects in Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 to 5).
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
- research, gather and analyse information
- question and make judgements
- write for a variety of purposes.
Stage 4 (year 7 and 8) and stage 5 (year 9 and 10) Mandatory Courses
Geography - is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Students learn to question why the world is the way it is, reflect on their relationships with and responsibilities for the world and propose actions in order to become informed, responsible and active citizens.
History - develops in students an interest in and enjoyment of exploring the past. A study of History provides opportunities for examining events, people and societies from ancient, medieval and modern times, including twentieth-century Australia. Opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of civics and citizenship are a feature of the History syllabus.
Stage 5 (year 9 and 10) Elective Courses:
Commerce – This course enables young people to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and values that form the foundation on which they can make sound decisions about consumer, financial, legal, business and employment issues.
History Elective – This course develops an understanding of history, heritage, archaeology and the methods of historical inquiry and examine the ways in which historical meanings can be constructed through a range of media.
International Studies - Through education, travel, work and trade, students increasingly understand how the study of culture requires knowledge to informs values and develop individual and community participation, action and commitment to as a global citizen.
Philosophy and Ethics – Students will be empowered with the skills to participate in philosophical and ethical inquiry and they will develop the capabilities to respond to issues in human affairs in philosophical and ethical ways.
In Year 11 and 12, students can choose from a range of HSIE courses. These include:
